Program Highlights

The Outdoor Outreach Program got off to a great start with our special needs students from Aina Haina Elementary, Kalihi Elementary, Roosevelt High School and Leilehua High School taking part in our overnight camp out. The program was filled with new and exciting activities. We had such a wonderful time and look foward to our next camping adventure. Mahalo to all of our Teachers, Chaperones and a special mahalo to our military personnel from Fort Shafter who transported our Kalihi Elementary students to camp.

Our special needs students at Kaimuki High School participated in a day camp that took place at their school tailored especially for them. The day camp started right after school and ended into the night with diner and fun for all. Mahalo to Mrs. Tatafu and volunteers for making this a very special camp for our students.

KAMP Hawaii will be extremely busy this spring with 8 weeks of camping and 1 day camp. We are looking forward to a great spring campout that will attract over 1200 campers. The campers will get a quality program with a healthy lifestyle message attached. See you all in camp.

KAMP Hawaii ended the summer by reaching 4,852 participants at 39 program sites on Oahu. Mayor Mufi Hannemann made a visit to Kamehameha Field and gave a very inspiring speech to the kids. This past summer the objective was to educate our keiki’s about the harmful effects of drugs. We provided a drug free program by utilizing our hands on approach technique to drive home the importance of drugs and making the right choices.

In the end over 3,000 participants entered KAMP Hawaii “Pride and Victory” Healthy Lifestyle Contest. Judging by these results, the kids did really pay attention during our activities. Each entry was carefully read and reviewed by Mr. KALO and his Committee. We had 18 entries selected and they were given prizes for their efforts.  The entries that were selected were: Andres (Petrie Park), Julie (Kamiloiki Park), Anisa and Kailyn (Manoa Valley), Amy (Makiki Park), Ethen (Sheridan Park), Justin (Kalihi Valley Park), Kawehi (Fern Park), Haley (Halawa Park), Jonathon (Makakilo Park), Virginia Lynn (Mililani Park), Zoey and Dane (Crestview Park), Ashley and Edward (Hauula Park), Jared (Ben Parker Park), Nick (Waimanalo Park) and Ian (Ahuimanu Park). Outdoor Outreach Program

What a great way to start off the Outdoor Outreach Program with our Special Needs Students participating in our one night two day program. This was a very special campout for us because several of our high school students have finished school and are ready for what awaits them. Some of these students have participated with KAMP Hawaii for a number of years. All of the students participated in all of our activities and swimming again was a great hit. Students and teachers from Leilehua H.S., Roosevelt H.S. and Aina Haina Elementary enjoyed forming new friendships and they bonded really well together. Campfire, smores and crab hunting was the highlight of the night. True mentorship at its best was witnessed when the older students helped the younger students cook their breakfast. Bacon, eggs and pancakes was enjoyed by all. We at KAMP Hawaii will really miss those students who have finished their time with us but they do know that they are welcome anytime! See you in the Fall!

Party at Kaimuki High School

by Aaron on December 27, 2006 · 0 comments

KAMP Hawaii put on a mini-day camp at Kaimuki High School on Dec 15 2007.  It was a winter break party for the special needs students of Mrs. Tatafu.  We started the afternoon off by doing archery.  Each student got to shoot several times and the targets were hit multiple times.  After that we started to cook using materials that the students had prepared in previous class sessions.  We baked cookies in our   box oven and  cooked bacon, eggs,  hamburger paties using tin can stoves and sternos burnners.  When all the food was cooked everyone ate a delicious afternoon snack and a good time was had by all.

See you in March for our Day Camp.

KAMP Hawaii has taught our students important life skills early on in their life. Through the activities that Aaron and his staff have provided, the students have learned the values of respect, teamwork, and citizenship. When the earthquake struck Hawaii, the students were equipped with the knowledge to take care of themselves. KAMP Hawaii facilitates activities that correlate with the student’s curricular subjects. For instance, First Aid and Health Studies goes hand in hand. Social Studies is brought to life when the students demonstrate citizenship towards each other and those they interact with. Learning Science couldn’t be better. The students love learning how to cook. When all is done, the students write about their experiences. This exercise encourages them to write about their thoughts and emotions. We cherish Aaron and his staff with all that he has contributed for the students of Jefferson Elementary. With the skills learned, our hopes are that the students grow to become whole and knowledgeable in anything they set their sights on. By giving the students the ability to empower themselves, their future is so much brighter. Thank you KAMP Hawaii in helping us to accomplish this.
